For a Harley Wide Glide (FXWG), a 20w50 would likely be a good choice. Synthetic is a good option, if the seals/gaskets are in good shape. Otherwise, if they are not, leaks COULD develop, if you go with a synthetic.

Either way, a 20w50 is likely what you’d want. A straight 50 weight might be an option as well, so long as the bike is only running in warmer conditions where the 20w would be unnecessary.

Beyond that, I’d suggest using the online database on this site to compare the 20w50 or SAE 50 oils and see which ones come out on top. Better quality counts, especially in the high heat areas (flashpoint, HTHS, NOACK) since this is a motorcycle application.

What oil should I use in my lawn tractor with a 20 HP. single cylinder Kohler engine? Also should I use a multi viscosity oil?

    MotorOilEvaluator says:

I don’t know what the original recommendation for that engine is, and I don’t know how old it is. However, in general terms, I’d stick with a straight weight oil if running a petroleum oil – probably 30 or 40 weight. If you go with a good quality synthetic, then a multi-viscosity might be ok (10w30, 10w40, 15w40).

If this tractor is ever used in colder temps, then a multi-viscosity would be a necessity during those winter months – 10w30 probably being a good choice, but, unless it was synthetic, I’m not sure I’d run this 10w30 in the warmer months as well.

If the engine is water cooled, then the issue of single vs multi-viscosity may be less of an issue, but, if air cooled, then my recommendations above regarding single vs multi-viscosity stand.

And, as with anything else, these are just general recommendations. I really don’t know enough about your application or this engine to be more specific, and, there may be other issues (such as engine age, modifications, condition and application) that I’m unaware of which MIGHT make the recommendations above less appropriate.
